Hailing from Portland, OR, Hoarse is a six-piece band with roots in early 2000’s hardcore, influenced by artists like <a href="spotify:artist:1Gi5tHYi0ptGG0G3tX9PkU" data-name="Gouge Away">Gouge Away</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:7vCI1d19vrokQuRkiAhwMC" data-name="SPY">SPY</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4ITkzAQWPILwWpEWJxHB9g" data-name="Earth Crisis">Earth Crisis</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2x48WoJGRLCpCWHEKXMZoB" data-name="Trapped Under Ice">Trapped Under Ice</a>. Hoarse’s driving rhythms, loud guitars, and deafening dual basses matched by the primal screams of Ryan Thuringer create a cathartic chaos that is all at once nostalgic and brand new.
Hoarse was formed in the darkest days of 2020, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and BLM protests in Portland, when friends Scottie Malec, Maxwell Tarply, and Matt Loe set out to build a perfect platform for Ryan Thuringer to scream upon. When Mike and Tyler Missel showed interest in the project, it was a no brainer: more guitar, more bass, more friends. At its core, Hoarse is about the community it creates. It’s a group of homies, pushing forward together in anger and love in the face of injustice. Thuringer’s lyrics carry themes of profound anger, fear, and frustration at the darkness of the world, as well as the hope found in solidarity, and the sanctuaries we create in community and chosen family.
Hoarse is a thundering, ear-splitting safe space for anyone who has something to scream about.
