Homayoun Sakhi is widely recognized as the most innovative Afghan rubab virtuoso of his generation. Born in Kabul in 1976 into a prominent musical family, he began learning the rubab at the age of ten with his father, Ustad Ghulam Sakhi, in the traditional ustâd-shâgird method.
In 1992, his family fled the civil war in Afghanistan, taking refuge in Pakistan, where Homayoun’s talent quickly gained recognition. Later, he moved to the United States, settling in Fremont, California, and became a respected performer, teacher, and composer.
Homayoun has revolutionized rubab playing by expanding its range, incorporating techniques from violin, guitar, and sitar, and introducing both upward and downward strokes with intricate rhythmic patterns. He turned the rubab into a powerful solo instrument.
In 2020, he founded the Rubab Academy, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Afghan classical music. Through it, he teaches students worldwide, helping carry forward this rich musical tradition.
As a composer, he has created works for the Kronos Quartet, Berlin Philharmonic, and others. He has collaborated with artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Ustad Farida Mahwash, and performed for royalty and global leaders.
His music bridges Afghan tradition and contemporary expression, captivating audiences worldwide with his virtuosity, creativity, and dedication.
