London duo House of Molly are punky disruptors with a healthy sense of irreverence. Named after band members Mel & Holly – Molly is a portmanteau – they centre Blackness and queerness, embrace glamour and hedonism, and fully endorse the transportive power of dance music. They take their sound seriously but believe in having fun.
House of Molly's building blocks were laid in Ibiza in 2022. Each member has a rock-solid musical background – Mel in producing and teaching, Holly in touring, toplining and recording as in-demand house vocalist RAHH – but they decided to write together with a common goal. "The plan was simple: let's make 3 songs that we can slot into a DJ set, then get booked at Glastonbury," Mel recalls. "But once we started writing, we realised we had something to say and the project was much bigger than we thought."
Though House of Molly is rooted in a two-woman musical partnership, it's also a house in the sense of a creative space with open doors. "We want to develop our music with artistic people who share our vision – we're lucky enough to have friends who do photography, videography, graphic design and choreography," Holly says.
In the studio and in their DJ sets, which are backed by stunning bespoke visuals, inclusivity is key. "We both grew up in Britain as mixed-race women who at times felt a bit displaced," Holly says. "This project is an antidote to that. No matter who you are, or if you feel you don’t fit in, you'll find a place in House of Molly."
