Two years after Strange Effect, their first album the Parisian band return on
September 29thwith Half Asleep Half Awake, a second album that will
restore your faith in rock music. And how do they do that? With a new
batch of overpowered hits, luminous melodies and diabolical fingerburning jams.
Yeah, yeah, we see you frowning: "A rock'n'roll record in 2023? But please allow us
to introduce them. Howlin' Jaws is a power trio made up of Djivan Abkarian (vocals,
bass), Lucas Humbert (guitar) and Baptiste Leon (drums), Lucas and Djivan met in
primary school before meeting Baptiste in secondary school and then start the band
in high school. The boys, fans of fifties and sixties music (Cochran, Small Faces,
Beatles, Kinks, Slade, etc.), are off on the rock highway. They release their first EP in
2019, then their first album, Strange Effect, in 2021, packed with flamboyant
moments and sharp riffs that cuddle the ear. But we're not here to talk about the past.
The present album is called Half Asleep Half Awake. For this second release, the
Parisians returned to London to Liam Watson’s Toe Rag Studios, the genius
engineer and producer behind the White Stripes' Elephant album and
collaborations with Madness, Tame Impala and Supergrass, to name but a few. In
the studio, they decided to swap efficiency for spontaneity, replacing overly
perfected riffs with a succession of psychedelic phases and thunderous rhythmic
signatures.
