Born Benijah Howell in June 1990, from Jamaican and Grenadian roots, I Jah was musically inspired from a young age from his father Kevin Sylvester, a reggae artist from London.
With both of his parents being Rastafarians, I Jah grew up surrounded by the smells of incense, African symbols and spiritual reggae music. This heavy background included the sounds of the Upsetters, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Big Youth lead to the birth of I Jahs sound. His start in the music industry came at 15 as a Grime MC releasing projects until 19 where he became interested in the dub scene. At 19 I Jah met Young Warrior (Son of Jah Shaka) and he began to perform with the sound system around the UK and Europe.
In 2012 I Jah teamed up with the Subajah family band, performing and touring around the UK. I Jah has been a support act for Tippa Irie, Culture, Aswad and Dre Island.
In 2019 I Jah released his debut single “Bun out the Anger”, a drill/reggae inspired track, which caught the attention of Stylo G, Gappy Ranks and Major Lazer. This helped establish I Jah as a neo UK Reggae Act. Since then, I Jah has featured on releases from D Rebell Productions, Royal Sounds and he is working on future projects with Ariwa Music.
