Canada's Inner Surge were founded in Calgary in 2001 by vocalist and guitarist Steve Moore, who also played enough bass and drums to write and record the project's debut album, Solus Verum, all by himself. Characterized by an unusual mixture of heavy metal, industrial and electronic music, hip-hop, and certain Eastern flavors (his vocals are very reminiscent of <a href="spotify:artist:5eAWCfyUhZtHHtBdNk56l1">System of a Down</a>'s <a href="spotify:artist:0BEI7i5sgUuivcfwXLzFmM">Serj Tankian</a>), the album's eclectic sounds and political lyrics set the tone for Inner Surge's frequent involvement in activist causes, and concerts such as Rock Against Racism 2002. In 2004, Moore fleshed out the band with guitarists Rob Spencer and Scott Taylor, bassist Jason Rees, and drummer Bryan Sandau before entering Calgary's Organic Sounds Studios to record the sophomore Matrika album, and his maverick spirit and thought-provoking music continued to pay dividends on Inner Surge's third LP, Signals Screaming, released in 2006 and featuring new bassist Jim Fernandes. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
