Raised on Queensland’s Gold Coast by a remarkably musical family, folk-pop artist Interstellar Tay has been writing music since she was eight. Known for her compelling mix of gritty folk and Australiana laced with elements of blues, ska, rock, and country, Tay’s work has been compared to acts like The Lumineers and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. But her authentic, firmly grounded sound and unique vulnerability set her apart: She seems completely at home in the centre of her music, each song a sturdy and intricate world. Influenced by an eclectic mix of genres and bands—from Motown, jazz and ska, to Aussie rock (Powderfinger, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly The Living End), Tay’s sunny, accessible folk-pop anthems, which are often deceptively upbeat, feature sharp, self-deprecating lyrics filled with observations of the current world as well as nostalgia for things past.

After releasing debut single “Garden Song” in July 2021 (which Rolling Stone AU featured as a “Song You Need To Know”) and follow-up “Wasted on You” in August, Tay dropped her debut EP Learn by Fire in early-mid 2022. A three-song EP celebrating the layered complexities of human experience, Learn by Fire was engineered, produced, and mixed by Jordan Power and features Scott Owen (The Living End) on double bass. Learn by Fire contains moments of both comfort and surprise, from the title track’s easygoing apathy to the lively stomp-and-holler final track “Drop me a Line.”
