On some level, all creative pursuits mean putting yourself out there—taking risks to try to connect. On NYC-based folk singer J. Alan Schneider’s latest and most ambitious release, that spirit couldn’t be more present, for better or worse. Whether it’s the performance itself (pounding on a guitar case in lieu of a drum set) or the production (trying to make that guitar case sound like a kick drum), All Lit Up puts the singer’s voice and instrumentation further in the front, and his comfort zone firmly in the rear view. It’s been almost two years since his last release, and since then he’s seen tens of thousands of streams, dozens of live shows, a few synced video placements, and eight brand new songs. As we move into 2020, we all need to focus on how to be the best version of ourselves, overcoming personal doubt so we don’t undercut what makes us, us.
Hear what that means for J. Alan Schneider on the new record All Lit Up, available everywhere now.
