J. Michael Phillips operates with a specific mindset: “I’ve always been the type that if I'm going to do something, I don't quit until I'm the best…I didn't come here to be number two.” The rising urban country artist wrote poetry and raps to process his complicated childhood and used these artistic methods to help get him through multiple prison sentences, which started when Phillips was a teenager. During his longest and last stint, he began building his music empire and soon after getting out, he found his unique style by leaning more country than rap, as shown on his independent debut Urban Cowboy. After a chance meeting with his now manager Edward Crowe, Phillips met hip-hop superstar Yelawolf, leading to a friendship and getting signed to Wolf’s label, Slumerican, and ultimately the creation of their 2025 collaborative album, Whiskey & Roses. “The album is a journey through ups and downs...Life is harsh and it’s great. It’s whiskey and roses,” Phillips explains. The 10-track collection highlights the unique sounds of Yelawolf and Phillips, while creating a fresh new take on country music, as evidenced by the singles “I Swear” and “Searching For Heaven.” Phillips hopes his truth-filled lyrics and music motivates listeners to believe in themselves. “In my music, I always preach to never give up. I hope it inspires people to do what your heart feels you should do and don't doubt yourself. Know that you're not alone in this world. We're all in this together.”
