One of Asia's greatest and best-known pop stars during the 1980s, Jacky Cheung grew up in Hong Kong, inspired by Barry Manilow while singing in various bands with school friends. In 1984, he entered an amateur singing contest and beat out thousands of contestants to take first prize. A contract with Polygram followed, and Cheung became quite a big star in the next three years. By 1987, however, Cheung hit a low point, and though he made a transition to the film industry, his musical career bottomed out by the end of the decade. With the help of producer Michael Au, Cheung returned to the top of the Asian charts with Love You a Bit More Daily, one of the top-selling albums in Hong Kong's history. From 1993 to 1996, his albums routinely sold millions of copies across the world for a total of more than 25 million sales. ~ John Bush, Rovi
