James Alexander is an Australian soul and R&B singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, & producer, deeply influenced by the London Acid-Jazz sound of the 90s.

In 2008, James Alexander began his recording career in collaboration with Derrick McKenzie — drummer and co-writer for Jamiroquai — who played on his debut album and remixed several of his tracks. That same period saw James and his band travel to Europe and open a major German festival for both Jamiroquai and The Brand New Heavies, a billing that placed him squarely within the lineage this music comes from. It is a lineage he has never left.

Since then, James Alexander has built a career that spans more than two decades of professional performance — running Gold Coast Soul Jam nights, leading the Solstice Band, and producing records for himself and others from a catalogue that now includes the compilation RE/VISIONS, available on all major streaming platforms. RE/VISIONS features members of Earth, Wind & Fire and includes “1975,” which Nile Rodgers of Chic described as “funky and tight on all levels.”

Book Dragon Vol. 1, the album from which “Everyday” is drawn, is a collection of the songs that shaped James Alexander as an artist — most of them absorbed in childhood, all of them returned to now with the full weight of a career behind him. A Jamiroquai cover, recorded by a man who once shared a bill with Jamiroquai, is not a tribute so much as a homecoming.
