James Hampton's music could be described as a fusion of Michael Bublé, Randy Newman and Rufus Wainwright all rolled into one. But musical inspiration was evidently built upon a quirky twist or two in his formative years.
An Irish heritage and some old-fashioned family lounge room-style entertainment opened the door to a wondrous music journey. But it was Christmas 1988 at the age of 5 when a young James Hampton was truly sold on this thing called music. Santa had delivered a cassette tape recorder and two mix tapes strategically chosen from his father’s own record collection of which he remembers instantly getting hooked, fascinated and mystified … and “wanting to understand it”. Hampton began formal lessons on piano from a local teacher who set him on the straight and narrow. The tinkering of the ivories continued and the magic was born.
Hampton & Bowman: Melbourne & Dublin.
Sometimes lucky things happen in unlucky times. James Hampton and Conor Bowman live 17,208 kilometres apart and yet during the pandemic, when both were resident in countries which were in lockdown, they somehow managed to write more than 50 songs together. When lyrics meet the right music somewhere in the universe, maybe distance doesn’t matter all that much!
