A member of an extensive family of Dutch musicians, Brandts Buys studied at the Raff-Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main. He moved to Vienna in 1893 and worked preparing vocal scores for Universal-Edition. His early work was commended by <a href="spotify:artist:5wTAi7QkpP6kp8a54lmTOq">Brahms</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5ihY290YPGc3aY2xTyx7Gy">Grieg</a> and he won the B"sendorf-Preis for his piano concerto. He composed eight operas as well as orchestral works, organ and chamber pieces. His quartet op. 25 contains impressionistic elements.
