Belgian composer/singer/songwriter Jan Swerts (1977) self-released his debut album Weg (Away) in 2010 to considerable critical acclaim in his home country. His deeply melancholy, minimalist piano music, subtly framed by beautiful string and woodwind arrangements, artfully blended the contemporary classical sounds of Sylvain Chauveau, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Max Richter with the confessional folk-pop songwriting of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, with the sometimes heart-rending results -- titled in Flemish, but sung entirely in English -- most strongly recalling the work of Dakota Suite.
His second album, Anatomie van de Melancholie (Anatomy of Melancholy), was released in 2013 by Universal Music and featured much richer, more detailed arrangements that occasionally ventured into jazz.
Schaduwland (Shadowland – Universal Music 2016) is Swerts’ post-apocalyptic soundtrack of a zombified existence after the great catastrophe, the musical score of his horror year in which his mother died and his son was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome.
Swerts’ latest release, Oud Zeer (Lingering Grief) is a musical graveyard journey. Swerts – who suffers from Asperger Syndrome – often wanders around cemeteries in search of the silence that lingers there.
With Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven as major influence, Oud Zeer - released by Unday Records - is a memento mori, in which Swerts reminds us of the comforting fact that soon we will be here…nevermore.
