The word catharsis traces back to the Greek word kathairein, meaning “to cleanse, purge.” That’s kind of what’s going on here. Jeff works as a graphic designer and these home recordings are another creative outlet to clear thoughts and express emotions (known or unknown). Many of these tracks are almost meditative or cinematic sound scapes, but grounded in simple, accessible musical forms and sounds. Recording begins when inspiration hits—not after ideas are complete. Jeff usually starts with a simple pattern on guitar, hits ‘record,’ then builds layers and patterns on top of that idea until the piece feels complete. Given this process, most of these are forgotten after they are recorded.
