Jenna Nicholls’ new album The Commuter captures a time of transition — from the grind of a corporate job in New York City to a creative life of a nurturing home in the Hudson Valley. Produced by Larry Campbell and released by Royal Potato Family, the record threads together stories from train rides, travels through the American landscape, and a deep connection to early 20th-century music and film.
The album includes songs first written for a musical about 1930s cowboy Will James, like “You, Me and the Moon” and “No Boots.” “Small Talk” was sparked on a train ride home from work after hearing a Randy Newman song. The title track, “The Commuter,” and closer “Holy Moses” show both the personal weight and quiet joy of change.
Nicholls’ live performances feature material from the album alongside earlier work, delivered on piano, ukulele, guitar, and more. Glenn Hansard declares, "Her songs land like a freight ship into the harbor of hearts and ears. The air changes. Pure mastery," while Larry Campbell praises, "Jenna Nicholls is a shining gem, pure and simple. A refreshingly distinct songwriter with a wonderful sense of melody, a captivating lyrical style and a stellar voice with which to bring her copious talents to the world.
Originally from Irwin, Pennsylvania, Nicholls moved east after college, eventually landing in Manhattan. She previously self-released three albums: Curled Up Toes in Red Mary Janes, The Blooming Hour and Radio Parade. The Commuter is her fourth release.
