John Cunningham is an English singer/songwriter and visual artist.

His first EP release Backwards Steps was a co-production with Stan Cullimore (The Housemartins). The release of Shankly Gates (1992) brought his music to a larger audience. The album was lauded as album of the month in the influential music magazine Les Inrockuptibles in June 1992. The French magazine would go on list the song Dim Crusade, from Shankly Gates, in their all time 1000 Essential Songs (2006).
This was followed by Bringing in the blue (1994), Homeless House (1998), Happy-go-unlucky (2002) with some arrangements and performances from Stereolab's Jo Watson and Fugu front man Mehdi Zannad.
In 1995 John produced original music for the first stage adaptation of Nick Homby's Fever Pitch, which ran at the West End's Arts Theatre London. Joe Pernice (The Pernice Brothers) released two albums entitled ‘John Cunningham 1998-2002' (Ashmont Records 2010)
French film director Mikhaël Hers used his songs in two of his films, Montparnasse (2009) and The Passengers of the Night (2022) He has worked/ gigged with John Martyn, Edwyn Collins, The Go-Betweens, Television, Rufus Wainwright, Yann Tiersen, Smog, Ben and Jason and Stereolab.
