Jonas H. Sjøvaag is a drummer, composer and artist, currently employed as a PhD fellow in Artistic Research at the University of Agder. He has been an active part of the Norwegian music scene for a long time, collaborating with artists like Andreas Ulvo, Karl Seglem, Mathias Eick, Sigurd Hole, Mattis Myrland, Hans Martin Austestad and many others. With an academic background from the Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway, jazz in all forms and variations, and the improvisation that follows from that, has always been the main musical focus.
He played the piano, starting at an early age aiming at becoming a classical musician, but started playing the drums as a hobby, in the local marching band, at age 11. Then, as life goes on and as reasoning is not always based on logic, an interest for improvisation grew meaning that at age 18 jazz drumming took priority over orchestral piano, and the compass needle pointed straight towards free improv, modern jazz, and related genres.
Nowadays a lot of different things happen. Sjøvaag releases tracks often, on a broad musical horizon. Sometimes singing, sometimes playing drums. Sometimes guided by standard form, sometimes by chance and freely improvised and interpreted notions. Always trying to explore, to have a foothold, and to connect the musical output with personal knowledge and background.
