Norwegian pianist Andreas Ulvo (b. 1983) has been influencing the norwegian music scene for almost two decades, with his unique blend of jazz, pop, classical and folk music, always done with an improvisatory touch. Ulvo aims to wipe out the borders between the composed and the improvised, with the piano naturally flowing between genres. His sound has been described as playful, melancholic and heart opening, and despite his wide range of influences, the music always sounds personal.
Ulvo was born and raised in Tobøl, a small town in Eidskog, Innlandet. Born into a musical home, he soon took up playing musical instruments, at first the guitar, since that was the instrument both his father and brother also played. When he was at the age of twelve, the family inherited an old upright piano from Ulvos grandmother, and from that moment he put away the guitar and started playing the piano, improvising over jazz standards. Later his grandmothers old piano was used for the album "Light & loneliness", recorded in his childhood home. At the age of sixteen, Ulvo left home to take up music studies, first at Stange highschool, then at nineteen he went to study jazz and improvisation at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. While still a student he released his debut album "The sound of rain needs no translation" together with his Ulvo ensemble. About the same time, he joined Mathias Eicks band, releasing two records on the ECM label
