Jonathan Segel

Best known as violinist/multi-instrumentalist/founding member of <a href="spotify:artist:1JXB7XQ9hjLB5pnr1eowKR">Camper Van Beethoven</a>, Jonathan Segel has been making music professionally since the mid-'80s, releasing albums under his own name as well as the bands Hieronymus Firebrain and <a href="spotify:artist:6sohzomgR8WGDSOz6CJkd3">Jack & Jill</a>. However, he’s also active in the avant-garde/free improv world, having received a Master’s Degree in Music Composition from Mills College where he studied with <a href="spotify:artist:4KMt98IljgbTUeeU9KAu7y">Fred Frith</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6ywzDJKoA3PbCiD16Vh1hI">Alvin Curran</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:27RypxD9VhgrvCg9QePTLi">Pauline Oliveros</a> (and earlier with <a href="spotify:artist:0NvRCfbmQFCAnfb9YQseem">Gordon Mumma</a> as an undergrad). <a href="spotify:artist:1jzAHIRbHREGgBtOer4jyQ">Chaos Butterfly</a> is the name of his electronic/improv project, active since 2004. He’s also been composing music for various dance companies since the early '90s. Although still active in <a href="spotify:artist:1JXB7XQ9hjLB5pnr1eowKR">Camper Van Beethoven</a>, Segel relocated to Europe in the 2010's where he became active with improvising space-rockers <a href="spotify:artist:2uvfGz1p9D7bj8MnuRPjlC">Øresund Space Collective</a>. He also formed improvising trio <a href="spotify:artist:3e2W6OECTqqKYCiFeNgkDJ">Sista Maj</a> with Andreas Axelsson and Mikael Tuominen, with their debut recording appearing at the end of 2016.
