Joyce Street is living proof that tenacity and deep, twangy pipes can go a long way. Born in rural Mississippi, Street harbored dreams of stardom from a young age. Armed with an arsenal of home recordings, she boarded a Greyhound bus to L.A. in 1969 to embark on her singing career. She soon signed a deal with Reena Records and cut three singles, “Life Ain’t Worth Livin’ (If I Can’t Have You),” “Mississippi Moonshine,” and “Make This a Good Christmas.”

By 1971, Street’s prospects in the music industry seemed as bleak as L.A.’s future. A massive earthquake had toppled freeways and razed homes in the San Fernando Valley, which, in concert with Street’s personal disillusionment, led to her writing “California You’re Slippin’.”

Street, now a housewife and mother, relocated to Austin, Texas with her family in the early ’70s. A series of cross-country and even cross-border moves ensued as her husband was transferred from post to post. Still, Street remained dedicated to recording. Using her meager savings, she recorded everywhere from Sonobeat in Austin to studios in Ohio and Canada. These later sessions yielded “That Man of Mine” and finally, a recording of “California You’re Slippin’.”
