J.R. Carroll gained his gospel pipes on Sunday mornings, leading the small-town Okie church choir by piano and voice. After finding a group of friends to sing and play along with, Carroll picked up an acoustic to accompany the songs in his head. What came of this is a set of songs that resonate with the fans of <a href="spotify:artist:13ZEDW6vyBF12HYcZRr4EV" data-name="Tyler Childers">Tyler Childers</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3Q8wgwyVVv0z4UEh1HB0KY" data-name="Jason Isbell">Jason Isbell</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0Z8XVUAOBPM4x12wKnFHEQ" data-name="Parker McCollum">Parker McCollum</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5MPWTD6J1H9XqYEOb4QkdH" data-name="John Moreland">John Moreland</a>, and his close friend <a href="spotify:artist:40ZNYROS4zLfyyBSs2PGe2" data-name="Zach Bryan">Zach Bryan</a>. Carroll performed alongside Bryan on his 2020 release, <a href="spotify:album:0JD12O9BYBGhhGCpF61lDT" data-name="Elisabeth">Elisabeth</a>.
