LOS ANGELES — Facing the truth can be hard, but for Nic Harcourt it was his fearless inner journey to “figure his shit out,” as he puts it, that paved the way for an explosion of creativity. After years of championing other people’s music, the former KCRW DJ, who’s been dubbed “the country’s most important disc jockey,” is along with co-producer and multi instrumentalist Ben Peeler, releasing his own music, under the moniker JumpCircus.
“Concrete and Sand,” a seductive, loungey concoction that calls to mind Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave, takes a look at the rollercoaster of highs and lows that’s been his life. The song
features the haunting vocals of rising indie-pop chanteuse Kita Klane, who is managed by Harcourt and wrote the verse she sings on and produced the vocals.
He also enlisted an impressive list of collaborators for the project: Joachim Cooder (Ry Cooder, Juliette Commagere) plays drums and percussion. Dave Palmer (Fiona Apple, Fleetwood Mac, Cake, Tegan and Sara) plays piano. And, Jon Button (Rachael Yamagata, Shakira, the Who) is on bass. Oliver Krause (Beth Orton, Tom McRae and Sia) wrote, performed, and recorded the gorgeous multi-layered string arrangements for “Concrete and Sand.”
Considered an influential tastemaker, Harcourt is widely credited with breaking such artists as Coldplay, Adele, the Black Keys, Norah Jones, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Brandi Carlile, Dido, and others.
