Exposed to a world of explicit, implicit, and internalized racism as a result of being an Indo-Caribbean boy in a post-9/11 society, JURAKHAN (b. 1995) was raised on suburban Long Island for the majority of his adolescence. These experiences formed the foundation of his perspective as a composer, producer, rapper, and instrumentalist. Constant othering in his life drives him to create music that communicates with others for the sake of activism, understanding, and unification.
JURAKHAN hopes to curate a sonic amalgam of these influences that fully represents who he is. His style of music physically affects the listener; the purpose is to communicate his experience by changing how the listener’s body and mind feel through sound. He attempts to inspire empathy by causing other people, who are privileged enough to ignore structural issues in our society, feel how he feels and engage with open dialogue. Also, discriminated individuals rarely get the opportunity to tell their stories, so he strives to uplift as many of those voices as possible. Through his compositional process and collaboration, he hopes to create works of art that are unflinching criticisms of systemic atrocities, as well as explorations and celebrations of uniquely human experiences.
