Kalmhain

Coming out of the treacherous moors and dense forests of the natural preserve enveloping the small town of Kalmthout, Kalmhain is founded in 2019 as a musical solo project of F. Mærtens: a concoction of Norwegian-inspired black metal, infused with a tantalizing blend of post metal, shoegaze and electrifying electronic soundscapes.

Intense melodies, lush, swirling electronic textures, and screamed vocals entwine in its songs. Kalmhain’s penchant for breaking out of confining stylistic boundaries signifies a restless search for and exploration as an experimental metal project.

After its initial release in 2020, the debut album Eigenlicht quickly earned raving reviews, establishing itself as the leading newcomer in the Black Metal genre within the Benelux region. By incorporating explosive synthetic elements and a diverse range of instruments, Eigenlicht (2020) boldly defied the conventional sound of black metal. Taking an even bolder step away from tradition, the album Thanatos delves into experimental territory, featuring haunting choirs of screams and grunts layered with deep, captivating clean vocals. Through its intense and evocative narrative, Thanatos (2021) takes listeners on a desolate journey alongside the enigmatic fifth horseman.
