Over the course of her debut album through the telescope, the 22-year-old Slovakian musician Karin Ann tackles love, identity, mental health, and memory with an empathetic curiosity. Created with Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe, through the telescope finds Karin Ann traversing everything from brutalist folk to snarling gothic disco-rock. That it coheres into an entrancing whole is resolutely jaw-dropping.
Karin Ann’s ascent began in her teens: Early songs like “looking at porn,” and “babyboy” indicated a fearlessness in confronting mental health and LGBTQ+ issues.
