Katja Zakotnik found to the cello through a friend and she immediately inflamed by this instrument. Only five and a half years after she was born in Maribor/Slovenia, she decided (in writing!) that she wanted to become a cellist. Just some years later she won her first competition prize and many more -also international prizes- were to follow.
She completed her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover, Germany. Due to her passion for southern flair, she applied also to the Walter Stauffer Cremona Academy near Milan. Admitted there, she was allowed to attend monthly master classes with Prof. Rocco Filippini from 2003 to 2005.
Building on her diploma in Hanover in 2005 with the highest grade, she accepted the invitation of the famous cellist Bernard Greenhouse (Beaux Arts Trio) to the US East Coast, where she studied for six months.
Besides the intensity in her playing, this artist is characterized by innovative and modern thinking. She trained as a concert pedagogue and studied cultural management and cultural marketing. Her trademarks are new concert formats as well as moderated theme concerts. The WDR called her "concert format inventor." With her "Bachzustand" (the english title is "sit BACH and relax"), she can often be heard at festivals like Ruhrfestispiele or Mosel Musikfestival.
