Kei Matsumaru is a 26 year old saxophonist/composer, based in Tokyo, Japan.
Though born in Japan in 1995, Kei was raised in the highlands of Papua New Guinea where he calls home. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music, he relocated to Japan in 2018.
Kei is currently based in Tokyo and has been active mostly in the jazz/improvised/underground music scene, but often collaborates with artists from other genres and creative disciplines, such as contemporary dance, visual arts, and various media arts. In 2021, he was in a band led by Jim O'Rourke to perform Christian Marclay's graphic score "To be continued" as part of Marclay's exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
Kei is a member of a rock/jazz/experimental band SMTK with Shun Ishiwaka, Marty Holoubek, and Tokutaro Hosoi, as well as mºfe, an electro-acoustic trio, with Kosuke Ochiai and Yusei Takahashi.
He also periodically presents "dokusō", 90min solo saxophone performances through which he explores the perception/relationship between time, space, body, and instrument.
Kei has most recently worked with: Eiko Ishibashi, Jim O'Rourke, Otomo Yoshihide, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Dos Monos, etc.
Following the release of his 1st album Nothing Unspoken Under the Sun in 2020, his 2nd album The Moon, Its Recollections Abstracted has just been announced, due to come out on October 19, 2022.
