Kelli Scarr is an American singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in New York's Hudson Valley. She is also the founder of Vera Jean Music, a pioneering record label dedicated to championing the talents of women artists over the age of 40. On June 13, she unveiled Greater Mysteries, an immersive album and performance experience that draws on timeless mythic journeys to the underworld. Born from an artist residency in Crete and recorded in Iceland, the album serves as a symbolic invitation for listeners to connect with their own cycles of transformation. Transcendent piano and airy woodwinds intertwine with otherworldly voices and the earthy pulse of the rhythm section, creating a soundscape steeped in myth and mystery.
Born in Northern California, Scarr began singing in church before attending Berklee College of Music and settling in New York. She has collaborated with the bands Moonraker and Salt & Samovar, as well as writing, recording, and touring with Moby. She is also an accomplished film score composer, earning an Emmy nomination for her score to the HBO documentary In A Dream.
Scarr’s solo albums Piece (2010), Dangling Teeth (2012), and No Rush (2021) established her as a singular voice in atmospheric, emotive songwriting. With Greater Mysteries, she steps into a new realm, offering music as an initiatory experience. The project unfolds through intimate previews in the Hudson Valley this summer, culminating in immersive cave performances this fall.
