Kenyan musician Kwame Rĩgĩi has soared to new heights with his new EP, “Nyona,” which features five tracks. He has created rhythmic layers of new sound with the familiar soulful vocals and thematic word play that his fans have come to expect.
The first track– ‘Njigua” or ‘The Listener’ is a play on words related to the concept of listening. This short musical piece that evokes Malian and desert blues also features Nyambura Sallinen on violin.
In the fifth track, “Wa Nyonia” or “Reveal” which inspired the EP, Kwame calls on the listeners to go on a journey of self-discovery to embody love, light, truth and peace. The track was mastered at the world-famous Abbey Road recording studio in London, home to some of the world’s music greats such as Fela Kuti, Elton John, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, ED Sherian just to name a few.
The track features award winning saxophonist Michael Garding from Canada, musical director of “The 19-piece Michael Garding Big Band” a perennial favorite at the BC Interior Jazz Festival. The song also features pianist Mark Tucker (who also plays on multiple tracks of the EP) of the ‘Mark Tucker Trio’ who perform jazz tunes in the classic Blue-Note style. Lem Meador of The Branding Iron recording studio based in GA is the mix engineer genius of the EP.
