La Cumbiamba eNeYé
The powerfully rhythmic and melodic Afro-Indigenous-Colombian music of La Cumbiamba NY recreates the traditional open-air Cumbia gatherings known as cumbiambas, the ensemble’s namesake. With traditional instruments such as the indigenous Gaita flutes and the Afro-Colombian drums the group, led by multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator Martin Vejarano, has established itself as one of the finest Cumbia ensembles in the US.

La Cumbiamba NY performs Gaita Music, also known as Cumbia, with its traditional instruments ensemble: Gaitas Y Tambores. Gaita music was born as a result of the cultural syncretism that took place in the Colombian territory during the years of the Spanish Colony. Musical director Martin Vejarano says “the band’s music features traditional sounds with a contemporary approach, all present in the band’s original repertoire”. Gaita music has a festive and danceable spirit.
