Newcastle-based musician Liam Fender’s genuine, intuitive and articulate songs are proof that music truly can be a calling. “I haven’t chosen to do this,” he says. “It's just in my DNA.”
If you’ve joined the dots between Liam’s surname and his place of birth you may think he’s onto something with his point about DNA, but his earthy, honest songs showcase an artist in his own right, with Love Will Conquer just a small taste of what’s to come.
Liam describes his style as post-industrial romance, taking lyrical and thematic cues from the likes of Richard Hawley. “There’s a distinct sense of a bygone era,” he says, “but in all that you find real people, real voices and real stories.”
Liam grew up among the people, voices and stories of the musicians, creatives and free spirits who’d visit the family home to hang out with Liam’s dad, himself a keen musician “Since then I’ve always been interested in people who follow their path without conforming to what’s expected.”
Liam’s own path led to music and it didn’t take long for sparks to ignite and as local gigging continued, Liam yearned for more. It was a long time coming, and Liam considered his options on more than one occasion, but he couldn’t leave songwriting behind. With a little more life experience, he’s now perfectly placed to be making music for all the right reasons: “I’m in my thirties and I’ve got a very different idea now about what success looks like and means. In many ways, music is complete therapy for me.”
