The Lichfield Cathedral Choir, which is made up of 18 boy choristers ranging in age from 9 to 13, nine Lay Vicars Choral, and three choral scholars, can trace its roots as far back as 1315. The ensemble is trained and directed by the Organist and Master of the Choristers, Philip Scriven, aided by assistant organist Alex Mason. The fundamental task of the choir is to lead the music for the Opus Dei, which is the daily worship in the cathedral. Their repetoire ranges through the centuries from Gregorian chant up to contemporary church compositions. During a single term, singing in over 80 services, it rarely performs a piece of music more than once. Besides occasional concerts and recitals, the choir has made frequent television and radio broadcasts, as well as recordings. The choir has also made several tours that not only bring the music to a wider public, but also help establish ecumenical and international relationships. These tours have included concerts in Christ Church in Naples, the All Saints Church in Rome, the Frankfurt Cathedral, Les Soeurs de l'Assomption and the British Embassy in Paris, Ste. Foy Centre Church in Lyon, St. George's Church in Paris, Concert and Eucharist in the Cologne Cathedral, two U.S. tours of the East Coast with concerts and services in Bangor, ME; Litchfield, CT; New Brunswick, NJ; Washington, D.C.; Orlando, Sarasota, and Tampa, FL; Philadelphia; Atlanta; a Papal audience at the Vatican with concerts at the British Embassy to the Vatican; masses at St. Peter's and Santa Maria Maggiore; and tours of Germany and the Netherlands.
