Lizbet Sempa is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from South East London.
In 2013, she found herself a sensation seemingly overnight on the strength of tracks like “Epiphany” and “Mistakes”—two of the first songs she had ever written—which showcased the incredible power of her voice over sparse, soulful piano backdrops and earned her over one million Soundcloud followers in the process. She seemed to arrive fully formed, her voice tracing a line from Adele to Erykah Badu, her compositions displaying the lyricism of Joni Mitchell and the understated force of Antony and the Johnsons.
In truth, there was nothing overnight about her success: those songs were the result of a musical evolution that started at age seven when she first sat down at a piano and began to take form at sixteen. ABBA and Biggie had soundtracked her weekends and sang her to sleep, but it was Dilla that changed her life. She began writing along to her favorite beats from artists like Doja Cat, MNDSGN, and KNXWLEDGE before discovering she could compose on piano when heartbreak led her there to write “Mistakes”.
In the two years since, Lizbet has been on a journey of discovery. Attending acting school has allowed her to explore her own mind and the nature of humanity by becoming others; attending writing and production sessions in London studios has allowed her to explore sound as she becomes herself.
