After years of playing together in the regionally successful folk/bluegrass band <a href="spotify:artist:7fIZXzAzko8JptzXOzXeJd" data-name="Dogwood & Holly">Dogwood & Holly</a>, Owen Davenport (upright bass), <a href="spotify:artist:7Jfdkv4Spx4AFDdrfICccs" data-name="Richie Worrell">Richie Worrell</a> (Vocals/Guitar), and Luke Sawyer (Banjo) began entertaining the idea of returning to their first love - progressive rock music. Trading in the traditional instruments for electric guitars (Worrell), electric bass (Davenport), and a drum kit (Sawyer), the trio began playing shows for fun in their home city of Lynchburg, VA along with friend of the band and guitarist, Ray Fuentes. In 2018, the band began writing songs under the name Long Live The Pilot - a reference to drummer Luke Sawyer's daytime occupation as a commercial airline pilot. In 2019, the trio added a fourth member on organ/keys - Oklahoma native Kyle Thiessen. The addition of organ to the band's sound proved to be the missing ingredient to the trio's existing songs, and in 2020 the now four piece band set to work recording and mixing their debut album, "Bloom".
With influences ranging from math rock acts like <a href="spotify:artist:3qu0nHytyZet7JFUe2Afow" data-name="Via Luna">Via Luna</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2JFljHPanIjYy2QqfNYvC0" data-name="Chon">Chon</a>, to progressive artists like <a href="spotify:artist:4sfKoex9YB5zZ0HSuBVpeF" data-name="An Endless Sporadic">An Endless Sporadic</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5NXHXK6hOCotCF8lvGM1I0" data-name="Porcupine Tree">Porcupine Tree</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:72cly4X4ZmCPyVF5aKxMtk" data-name="Long Live The Pilot">Long Live The Pilot</a> uses instrumental compositions to illicit moods and take listeners on musical journeys. The band shares a common love of all genres, and dabbles in everything from light-hearted Midwest rock melodies, to country-esque chicken pickin' guitar runs, to fusion-inspired prog rock epics, while still maintaining a sound that is uniquely and unmistakably their own.
