These are fundamental truths: Anyone who sings like Long Tall Deb should never need a day job. And Colin John is one of the finest guitarists the public has yet to discover. In “Light It Up,” their third release, the powerhouse roots-soul vocalist from Texas and British-American guitar alchemist deliver riveting blues-rock melodies with lyrics that are pure cinema. A treasure trove of originals, there are but two covers: Eurhythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” reimagined as a blues shuffle with Deb’s seductive growl; and the Willie Dixon-penned “Spoonful” – a nod to Howlin’ Wolf, an idol to Deb and Colin. Chris Butler, the mastermind behind the popular 1980s band The Waitresses co-produced the recording, with Deb and Colin, intuitively arranged the track order and played both drums and bass on various cuts. Guests include: Jennifer Milligan, backing vocals on “Sweet Dreams” and “House On Fire”; Steve Mariner, harmonica on “Spoonful”; and Alastair Greene and Pascal Fouquet, guitar solos on the instrumental “Out for a Rip.” “Light It Up” should, in the title track’s words, “start a new kind of fire.”
