In Lux Lyall’s dark and decadent world, little is as it appears. Theatrical songs steeped in sumptuous strings owe a debt to old-school Hollywood, but have their roots in Camden’s gritty rock haunts. Lyrics littered with nods to film noir spring from modern-day issues including mental health.
VAMP, the Cyprus-raised, London-based singer’s bewitching debut album, shares DNA with Lana Del Rey, David Bowie’s Black Star and PJ Harvey in menacing mode.
At heart it’s a playful rock record, sent soaring by brass and strings. Songs unfurl at a stately pace. Lyrics are delivered dream-like, slowly revealing secrets. Themes of mental health, survival and female solidarity are at the core of the album.
VAMP’s 10 spellbinding songs are packed with compelling characters, drinking dens, fierce leading ladies, wayward girls & wicked women.
“Non of the songs are straightforward and some of the stories are made up. But really, they’re all about being accepted.”
All the singles have had short spoken-word compositions as B-sides. As such, debut spoken word album BAD OMENS has been released as a companion piece to VAMP.
"Some poems have already appeared as B-sides" says Lux "but much of BAD OMENS was written during a self-imposed four day stint at a London hotel. After lacking creative inspiration for months I trapped myself in a room, avoided using my phone, avoided seeing anyone, avoided sleep & didn’t leave - except to visit the hotel bar - until I’d finished writing."
