Gonzalez founded M83 in the early ‘00s. Inspired by memory and melancholy, he recorded the self-titled debut in 2001, followed by the critically acclaimed Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (2003), establishing his emotionally immersive style. As sole creative force, he expanded the project’s scope with Before the Dawn Heals Us (2005) and the ambient Digital Shades Vol. 1 (2007).
Saturdays = Youth (2008) marked a breakthrough, embracing ’80s pop nostalgia and melodic warmth. The double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (2011), featuring the global hit “Midnight City,” earned a Grammy nomination and worldwide acclaim.
Gonzalez later expanded into film scoring, including Oblivion (2013), while continuing to experiment across Junk (2016) and DSVII (2019). Fantasy (2023) reaffirmed M83’s melodic immediacy and live energy. In 2025, he recorded and released two soundtrack albums: A Necessary Escape, composed for Jalil Lespert’s documentary Dakar Chronicles and the score for the Chinese film Resurrection.
Across more than two decades, Gonzalez has built immersive musical worlds that balance intimacy with grandeur.
