Like a singing traveler on the path of time, Ma Chang-sheng exudes a feeling of closeness despite seeming to be a lone wayfarer. A minstrel in the Buddhist music world, Ma has unlocked a unique style. His creations touch the heart as they convey just the right degree of warmth and softness without any artificiality. His diction, mild and unconventional, divulges implications of awakening with its flavorful and profound essence. His voice conveys a drifting sentiment that remains long with the listener and touches one’s heart strings through its undulating quietness.
With ancestral roots in Jiangsu, Ma was born and raised on the expansive pastures of Qinghai. Immersed in the bounty of nature and religious elegance there, he was awakened in the depths of his soul to the creation of Buddhist music. This led him to meet the holy Zhu-Wang Cai-Kun Rimpoče with whom he studies and practices Tibetan Buddhism. His music has always been accompanied by his religious beliefs. The guqin, his voice, and his heart of a true Buddhist disciple are the origins of his creations. His genuine serenity births the poetry he uses. And his passaddhi lifestyle allows him to be free and at ease in his music.
