Named for Ester Mägi, “First Lady of Estonian music,” the Mägi Ensemble is a women’s chamber choir that performs compositions from the Baltics. Led by Heather MacLaughlin Garbes, the ensemble’s focus on Baltic music stems from the strong relationship between the choral and the Baltic studies departments at the University of Washington and an interest in the power of music to unite people and preserve cultural heritage.

2018 will see the centennial independence celebrations of Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. The Mägi Ensemble is honored to be traveling to all three countries this summer to perform our new CD, visit our esteemed namesake, Ester Mägi, and to participate in historic national song festivals in Latvia and Lithuania.

We’re also traveling to Portland in March to share this music at the Northwest Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, and performing at Stanford in June, both of which are great honors for the choir. We are looking forward to collaborating with Seattle Choral Company for their concert in March commemorating the centennial celebrations!
