Malaa's forte is stern if frequently humor-laced bass house tracks. Concealing his face in a balaclava, he's presented with an air of mystery, fueling speculation about his true identity. An early press bio dropped a crumb by referring to him as Parisian. Theories regarding his identity have also been fostered by an affiliation with Pardon My French, a collective that includes DJ Snake and Tchami; multiple dance music media outlets have theorized that Malaa's recordings are actually a joint effort from those DJs/producers. Malaa's prolific output dates back to 2015 and includes the albums Don Malaa (2022), Veni, Vidi, Vici (co-credited to Tchami, 2024), and All In (2025), plus mixtapes, EPs, singles, and remixes numbering in the dozens. Tracks such as "Notorious," "Revolt," and "Made in France" are among Malaa's commercial highlights.

Fool's Gold Records hosted the 2015 debut Malaa single, "Pregnant," immediately after which Tchami's Confession label became the supplier of roughly a dozen Malaa singles and EPs across 2016 and 2017. Among Malaa's most popular releases during this period were "Notorious" and the Tchami collaboration "Prophecy," while the artist also began to accumulate remix credits, highlighted by his commissioned work on Skrillex and Diplo's Jack Ü track "Mind." Maala released the project's Illegal Mixtape and Illegal Mixtape II, respectively, in 2017 and 2018, and during the latter year, he and Tchami went on the No Redemption Tour, promoted with a compilation of the same title that contained exclusive remixes. Malaa's 2019 releases included the high-energy singles "Revolt" (featuring Jacknife) and "Criminals" (featuring Rezz), and he, Tchami, and fellow Pardon My French member Mercer also assisted DJ Snake with "Made in France."

Several additional singles and the third Illegal Mixtape led to the 2022 release of Malaa's first proper album. Titled Don Malaa, the LP boasted collaborations with rappers Ghostface Killah, Fivio Foreign, and Jadakiss. DJ Snake and A-Trak also provided assistance on a track each. Shortly thereafter, Don Malaa: After Hours gathered remixes from Siwell, Subshift, and KOOS, among others, and Malaa presented the fourth Illegal Mixtape. Malaa and Tchami then teamed up to deliver the 2024 album Veni, Vidi, Vici, led by the driving Disco Lines collaboration "Nineteen 84." In January 2025, Malaa unloaded two albums: All In, featuring an appearance from Jeremih on the opening title track, and Blackout, a more varied set billed as the work of Malaa's alter ego. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
