Mark Ciani has spent over 25 years as a songwriter/producer in the New York City music scene. Critically acclaimed, Mark has been called "a sure hand with misdirection and revealing detail; he knows exactly how to bring a character alive and how to fill a song to its corners with charisma and intrigue."
Starting off as a songwriter and keyboardist for punk ska band Freaks from the Apocalypse in the 1990s, Mark established himself as a dynamic performer and compelling writer. Beginning in 2012, Mark played keyboards, and wrote and produced for various projects.
In 2022, Mark wrote, produced, played keyboard and--new for him--assumed lead singer duties on his first project under his own name, the two albums titled King of Death and King of Death Returns. Linked by Mark's voice and the frequent use of string and horn quartets, the albums are cohesive, yet massive in scope and ambition. On perhaps the darkest, yet poppiest album of his career, Mark expanded the King of Death sound to new heights on his next album, 2023's Sad Robot.
Now, as 2024 turns to 2025, Mark released his new single, Some Kind of Purgatory, in advance of his new album, The Catacombs. Some Kind of Purgatory is a stumbling, chaotic, joyous song that never settles into one thing: the song is one surprise after another. Both the new album and single are gripping listens--sonically adventurous and moving lyrically.
