Born in a small town on the edge of the Kalahari and raised in the North West Province of South Africa, Marlene Verwey has travelled a long way from these beginnings. She studied the flute at the University of Pretoria and it was here where she caught the attention of Italian virtuoso Rafaele Trevisani from the the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan while he was on tour in South Africa, and travelled to Italy to study with him.
Her studies continued with a Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon and a performance diploma at the Royal College of Music. She was selected for the prestigious Southbank Sinfonia in London, performing with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Edward Gardner and Michael Collins and worked alongside musicians from the Academy of St.Martin in the Fields, the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and the British Youth Opera. Later on she played in the Arensky Chamber Orchestra.
She was a prize winner at the International de Lorenzo flute competition held in Viggiano, Italy and was the overall winner in the 2004 SAMRO International scholarship competition. In 2007, she commissioned works for flute and piano by the South African composers Hendrik Hofmeyr and Stefans Grove.
She was a regular attendee at the Sir James Galway Annual Flute Festival and Masterclass. In 2008 she was awarded the headjoint prize, and in 2012 she was made the Sir James Galway Rising Star, the highest recognition that this grand master gives.
