His music "stretches the ethereality of dream-pop into blissout" (Pitchfork, 8.2) and has been described as "reverent, expansive, magical realist folk music” (Uncut) with a "clear, authorial voice" (Wire).
Often described as mercurial or transcendent - his scores and original compositions are featured variously in independent film, TV and art installations around the world.
His previous bands include AT/ALL, Function (Ensemble), Outshine Family, Warped and The Golden Lifestyle Band - performing in various incarnations alongside the likes of Low, Hiss Golden Messenger, Fennesz, Oren Ambarchi, Dinosaur Jr, Alisdair Roberts, Dick Dale, Thalia Zedek, Band of Horses & Archers of Loaf.
Nicholson’s first collaboration with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson entitled “Nine Movements” - a 39 min ambient instrumental immersive guided meditation - was cited by The Guardian as a hidden gem of 2021.
“Universal Outsider”, Nicholson’s most recent studio band LP, was released May 20, 2022.
Multiple new works are forthcoming in 2025, commencing with “Cascade of Shimmering Gates” - an art score turned album.”
