Brought up in Pennsylvania’s coal region, Matty Fresh began to relate to a local audience in 2014 with “Skook State of Mind,” a parody of Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind, which debuted alongside its popular music video. Upon attending Pennsylvania State University, Fresh continued to release local anthems, including “Trace McSorley”, an ode to Penn State’s former quarterback, which grew nationally after being featured by the NFL as part of a viral TikTok trend.
