One of the first klezmer revival bands in the Midwest, the Chicago-based Maxwell Street Klezmer Band gracefully blends Yiddish pop tunes, dance music, and Jewish folk songs. Named after Chicago's Jewish marketplace of the early 1900s, the group injects horn-driven energy into the music of the past. With guitarist and vocalist Lori Lippitz leading the way, this Big Band pays tribute to the Klezmer masters while allowing their music to evolve. Classical sophistication meets theatrical fun in an engaging performance filled with joy, soul, and humor. Steeped in rich traditions of Chicago jazz, a rollicking horn line and virtuoso violin has made the group the Midwest's premier Klezmer band since 1983. These master musicians and engaging entertainers delight audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Performance highlights include Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, Barbican Centre in London, Mozartsaal in Vienna, and a major collaboration with Lyric Opera of Chicago on an original klezmer opera, “The Property”. Maxwell Street Klezmer Band founded the Klezmer Music Foundation, a not for profit organization dedicated to increasing engagement and carrying on the tradition of klezmer music (including the Junior Klezmer Orchestra, the Congregational Klezmer Band Project, and the Salaam-Shalom Music Project, an interfaith ensemble). ~ by Lori Lippitz and Craig Harris
