Mel Semé was born in Camagüey, Cuba, to Haitian parents, and his passion for music took root at an early age — playing alongside his brothers and sisters in the local church band. By the age of nine, he had already begun formal music studies, later graduating from the prestigious University of the Arts in Havana in 2001.
After moving to Europe, Mel made his mark as a jazz drummer and percussionist, touring and recording with numerous bands across Scandinavia. Today, he’s based between Barcelona, LA and New York, where he brings his vibrant Cuban energy to the Broadway stage in Buena Vista Social Club: The Musical.
Beyond the stage, Mel is a creative force — writing, producing, and performing with his band Gone Gone Beyond, and composing evocative soundtracks and soundscapes for film and media.
