Originating in the southern tip of Ontario, Mellodraw come from an area surrounded by fields, farmland, and open space.
Founding member Jacob McLean (guitarist, singer, songwriter) was inspired to fill that space with a sound that would resonate with those in the local music community and alternative listeners around the world. Mellodraw creates ethereal and dynamic music by combining shoegaze, dream pop, and post-punk elements, as well as many other diverse influences into a sound of their own.
The band began as a solo project inspired predominantly by bands from the 80s and 90s such as <a href="spotify:artist:7bu3H8JO7d0UbMoVzbo70s" data-name="The Cure">The Cure</a> & <a href="spotify:artist:72X6FHxaShda0XeQw3vbeF" data-name="Slowdive">Slowdive</a>. To break into the Windsor music scene a live band was formed, bringing in drummer Jeremie Brousseau and guitarist Grady Caplin to collaborate.
Mellodraw released their debut album <a href="spotify:album:3IHfPRvdzy4KgC5IC61Fg9" data-name="Eternal Mirror">Eternal Mirror</a> in 2017, recorded in Ottawa and produced by Cory Bergeron of <a href="spotify:artist:6h0cRpTv4GFq0zYbCbsDXy" data-name="Locket">Locket</a> (with drums by Joey Demers of <a href="spotify:artist:5WH57wBnMti80IPvNFef8f" data-name="Heavy Hearts">Heavy Hearts</a>). Since then, the group has garnered a local following with their unique, infectious songs and high-energy live performances. The band's follow-up album the <a href="spotify:album:0flwzOoVyq3UligF1OleE1" data-name="Sunny Days - EP">Sunny Days - EP</a> was released in 2018, and the group spent most of 2019 playing shows across Southern Ontario alongside acts such as <a href="spotify:artist:2bTjArGDYivNxnYFH5jUcj" data-name="Glitterer">Glitterer</a> & <a href="spotify:artist:3ZOX2dQRZEB6qADJd4emx2" data-name="Suburban Living">Suburban Living</a>.
Mellodraw is constantly working to perfect their sound and recently went back into the studio to record their follow-up EP “Southwest Melancholy”. This marks the band's second project to be produced by Cory Bergeron, released on March 19, 2021.
