Mhysa is the musical persona of multidisciplinary artist E. Jane. Despite references to mainstream stars like Donna Summer, Prince, Lauryn Hill, and Beyoncé, the vocalist/producer's atmospheric ballads and discordant experimental club tracks have found suitable homes on progressive labels such as NON, Halcyon Veil, and Hyperdub. Among Mhysa's releases are the widely acclaimed Fantasii (2017) and Nevaeh (2020).
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, E. Jane got involved with music as a youngster, singing in church and at school. In 2015, between earning degrees -- a Bachelor of Arts from Marymount Manhattan College and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania -- E. Jane debuted as Mhysa on "Power Cuts," a Chino Amobi collaboration released on the NON label. Hivemind, an EP led by an update of Sade's "Jezebel" that rendered the source material nearly undetectable beyond the lyrics, followed on NON in 2016. Fantasii, a full-length recorded for Rabit's Halcyon Veil label, appeared in 2017 and was acknowledged as one of the year's best albums by publications such as The Wire, The Quietus, and FACT. Mhysa returned in early 2020 with Nevaeh, a more ambient and intimate set for Hyperdub. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
