In 1965 Michael Hayes’ sixth grade class was given the assignment to write a paper on the “What is a Sonata” episode of Leonard Bernstein’s The Young People’s Concert program, and Hayes’ paper was selected to send to Bernstein, who wrote back an encouraging letter that would prove a turning point. Inspired to take up the drums first, Hayes worked as a professional drummer in 1970s Boston, and won a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in 1978. He dropped out after a year, and shifted his focus to the vibraphone, studying with folks like Ed Saindon, Deve Samuels and Gary Burton. His first record, I Vibe, appeared in 1988. A self-titled followup came out in 1994. He recorded prolifically, and formed a standards trio that did a year’s worth of weekly gigs, but eventually retired from performing in 1998.
